Description
The case contains a brief description of the Bank’;s launching, as an answer to an urgent need of the poor population which couldn’;t find a way of obtaining loans for the acquisition of raw material to be worked on and sold later. The loans informally available, that is, not from the banks, had usurers interest rates and came from rich people exploiting the financial needs of the poor. It also describes the way Grameen has been developing its practice, namely by lending money mainly to women, against the dominant male chauvinist culture; the pedagogy used to create a favourable atmosphere regarding the loans reimbursement, through formation meetings and accountability of groups.
