This case highlights the local and regional setting facing Mr. Sadaat Awan, General Manager of Hotel Las Hojas, and his decision making process used to turn around a medium-sized hotel recently devastated by a tropical storm. Mr. Awan is originally from Pakistan and studies Hotel Administration in Salzburg, Germany. He possesses over 35 years of experience in the Costa Rican tourism industry and accepted the position at Hotel Las Hojas in an attempt to rebuild the hotel while at the same time fostering inclusion of the local community through various projects. It had been Mr. Awan's vision to set an example for the tourism industry, not only in El Salvador but also in the rest of the region, with his management of the hotel. He had inherited the positions with a serious problem of financial leverage, changing markets and customers, and challenging local conditions.
